Growth strategy is a popular type of case often given in final round consulting case interviews. This case focuses on company expansion either through organic growth (increased sales) or inorganic growth (acquisition of a competitor).
Organic growth
When looking into organic growth the following would have to be considered:
- Improving the existing product
- Adding new products
- Reducing prices
- Finding new distribution channels
- New customer segments
- New markets
Inorganic growth
For inorganic growth, the following could be considered:
- Acquiring other companies
- Joint ventures
- Partnerships
In trying to approach this type of case, the first key item to understand is what goal the company is trying to achieve with their growth strategy. Are they looking to take more control of the market? Are they looking to expand to new markets? After having a picture of the objective, the next thing to do is quantify this goal, to a specific amount and timeframe.
After this is done, you now want to look for potential organic growth opportunities. At this point, you will want to ask questions about the existing revenue sources and products, and see what options there might be to improve revenues in these categories.
Following the analysis on organic growth strategies, now you will want to evaluate inorganic growth opportunities. Ask questions about peers in the same market of the company and companies that might offer synergies.
Finally, when giving a recommendation in the end, ensure your recommendation covers the follow areas:
- Impact
- Difficulty/Ease of implementation
- Costs
- Timelines
With these in mind you should have a good idea of what to expect in a typical growth strategy consulting case.
